Project location and local files

Understand where Leafage stores projects, generated images, imports, backups, and license state.

Last updated June 26, 2026

Leafage is a local desktop app. Your canvases, project manifests, imported images, and generated assets are stored on your Mac in the Project location you choose.

What the project location is

The project location is the folder Leafage scans on the Projects screen. Each project lives as its own folder inside that location.

Leafage uses that folder for:

  • Project names, canvas state, nodes, connections, and selected generations.
  • Imported images copied into the project.
  • Generated image assets saved after Codex finishes.
  • Project thumbnails shown on the Projects screen.

Changing the project location does not upload anything. It only tells Leafage which local folder to use.

Choose a good folder

Pick a folder that is stable and backed up.

Good choices:

  • Documents/Leafage
  • A project workspace you already back up.
  • A local folder synced by Dropbox, iCloud Drive, or another provider only if files remain available offline.

Avoid:

  • The mounted .dmg installer.
  • /Applications.
  • Trash, Downloads cleanup folders, or temporary folders.
  • Cloud folders set to remove local files automatically.

Change the project location

  1. Open the Projects screen.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. In General, edit Project location or click Browse.
  4. Click Save.

Leafage reloads the Projects screen from the new folder.

Move projects to a new folder

The safest way to move projects is to use backups:

  1. In the old location, open Settings -> General.
  2. Click Export all.
  3. Choose where to save the .leafage archive.
  4. Change Project location to the new folder.
  5. Click the Import button on the Projects screen.
  6. Choose the archive you exported.

Leafage skips projects that already exist in the destination.

What happens if the folder is missing

If the project location is deleted, renamed, disconnected, or no longer available, Leafage shows Choose where projects live or tells you the current project folder is not available.

Choose the original folder again if it still exists. If it does not, choose a new folder and import a backup.

Keep generated assets with the project

Do not move individual files out of a project folder by hand. Generated images and imported references are connected to the project manifest.

Where license state is stored

License and activation state are stored in Leafage’s app data, not inside each project. Moving a project folder does not transfer a license to another Mac. To use Leafage on a new Mac, recover your license from the app.
